Ambulance ramping at record high in WA amid dire health staff shortage, but authorities say COVID peak has passed

Western Australia has cleared the winter peak of both COVID and flu cases, but now faces a shortage of hundreds of health workers, as ambulance ramping figures again reach all-time highs.
The state has seen a dip in the COVID case load over the past week, with WA’s chief health officer indicating the wave has passed.

“All of our indicators show that we are falling and that, at least for this wave … we’re on the way down,” Andy Robertson said.

Flu cases are also declining after a “significant” outbreak over winter, according to Dr Robertson.

King Edward Memorial Hospital removes ‘offensive’ forced adoption apology amid redress fight

Holding up the adoption certificate she reluctantly signed as a 15-year-old mother, Lisa Moore still struggles to contain her outrage over the events of 40 years ago.
She chokes up and wipes away tears as she recounts what happened after she fell pregnant to her 18-year-old boyfriend while growing up in the suburbs of Perth in 1981.

Even though her parents offered to look after the baby, Ms Moore says the family was manipulated and lied to by social workers who were hell-bent on adopting out her unborn child.

“You’re told you can give them nothing and the adoptive parents can give them everything so you’re made to feel like a loser in a way,” she says.

Perth holidaymakers disappointed after school break starts with cancelled Bali flights

Perth residents yearning for a holiday — or a mental health break — have been devastated by a cluster of flight cancellations to Bali and other destinations this week.
Jetstar has cancelled one flight per day between Perth and Bali since Monday, leaving scores of West Australian residents — many of whom were to be travelling for the first time since COVID-19 border closures were lifted — unable to leave as planned.

The airline usually runs three flights per day on that route.

“We appreciate this is extremely frustrating for customers, especially during the school holiday period, and sincerely apologise for the disruption these delays have caused,” a Jetstar spokesperson said.

Tributes flow for Perth Zoo’s beloved elephant, Tricia, who died aged 65

Perth residents have remembered the “dignified and graceful” Tricia the elephant, a mainstay of Perth Zoo for more than six decades.
Tricia died this week after making it to the grand old age of 65, the oldest elephant in captivity in Australasia.

Western Australia’s Environment Minister, Reece Whitby, said Tricia “touched multiple generations”, and her long life was a testament to the wonderful care and support she received.

“So many children have seen her. Those children have come back with their own children,” he said. “And then they’ve come back again with their own grandchildren. We’re incredibly blessed that she was with us for so long.

Perth’s Metronet airport train line still facing uncertain opening date after decade in making

West Australians are still no closer to finding out when they’ll be able to catch a train to Perth Airport, more than two years after the long-awaited rail line was due to open.
The Forrestfield-Airport Link has been more than a decade in the making and is now nearing completion.

But exactly how long the final stretch will last remains unclear, with the government refusing to give any certainty beyond an opening some time this year.

The opposition said that was because the government had something to hide and called on Transport Minister Rita Saffioti to provide a date soon.
